Creating widgets with filters and conditional formats

This guide explains how to create widgets with filters and conditional formats.

Introduction

Filter data in widgets and dashboards to display only the information that you find relevant.

This guide uses the example of a Facebook Ads datastream. The procedure described below is similar in all other datastreams.

Concept

There are two types of filter:

  • Widget filters

Use widget filters to filter data at the level of individual widgets. This procedure is explained in this guide.

  • Dashboard filters

Use dashboard filters to filter data at the level of dashboards and dashboard pages. For more information, see Creating a dashboard with filters.

For more information about the different ways to filter data in Explore & Present, see Filter types in Explore & Present.

Conditional formats highlight metric values that satisfy set conditions. The conditions are evaluated in order, from top to bottom. This means that each condition will override previous conditions, even if the value meets both conditions.

Prerequisites

Before you complete the procedure in this guide, perform all of the following actions:

  • Make sure that your data extract contains the following fields:

    • campaign_name

    • impressions

Procedure

Creating widgets

To create widgets, follow these steps:

  1. In the platform navigation menu, click Explore.

  2. Select the workspace you work with in Explore & Present.

  3. Next to the View tabs at the top of the page, click Create new view.

  4. In the Dimensions panel, click Datasource to see the options for this field. Click Remove.

  5. In the list in the left navigation panel, select a dimension. This guide uses Campaign Name as an example.

  6. In the list in the left navigation panel, select a metric. This guide uses Impressions as an example.

  1. In the table that you have created in the middle of the page, click on one of the values in the Impressions column to see visualization options. Click All Campaign Names.

Adding a date range filter to the widgets

To filter the date range of the data displayed in the widgets, follow these steps:

  2. Select the date range.

Adding a dimension filter to the widgets

To add a dimension filter to the widgets, follow these steps:

  1. In the Widget Filters section, click Add dimension filter.

  2. In the Choose dimension drop-down menu, select Campaign Name.

  3. In the Filter by drop-down menu, select a campaign name.

As a result, only campaigns with more than 10,000 impressions are displayed in the widgets.

Adding conditional formats to metrics

To add a conditional format to a metric, follow these steps:

  1. In the Metrics section, click the metric to which you want to add a conditional format. This guide uses Impressions as an example.

  2. Click Conditional format.

  3. In the Conditional format window, click + Add conditional format.

  4. In the first drop-down menu, select the condition that the metric needs to meet. For this example, select > (greater than).

  5. In the second drop-down menu, choose if you want to base the condition on a comparison with a value or with another metric. For this example, select Value.

  6. Enter the reference value or select the reference metric. For this example, enter the value 12,000.

  7. Set the conditional format that will be applied if the metric satisfies the condition. To do this, use the settings listed below. For this example, select Bold text and Indicator up

    • Font color

    • Background color

    • Bold text

    • Indicator

The Example box shows what the metric will look like when the conditional format is applied.

  8. (Optional) Check Conditional formatting for the total row box to apply the formatting to the Total row.

  9. (Optional) Click + Add conditional format to add another conditional format to the same metric.

  10. Click Apply.

As a result, all Impressions metric values that are higher than 12,000 appear as bold text with an up indicator in the widget.
